"A rose is a rose is a rose is a rose". Gertrude Stein
"What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." William Shakespeare
Stephanie Madoff, daughter-in-law of Bernie Madoff has petitioned to change her surname and that of her two children to Morgan.
Oy vey.
Not only has this woman seemingly closed the door on her family- granted kin she married into- but has changed her ethnic from Jewish to Gentile.
Okay, there must be Semitic Morgans who chopped “stein” off their given names to assimilate into American culture. But in terms of financial folks, Morgan conjures up J.P. Morgan, with the P standing in for Pierpont. A most un-Jewish appellation.
There is still controversy about Madoff and the involvement of his kith, kin and employees. Allegedly, Bernie was able to pull off a billion dollar swindle for decades all by himself.
His two sons have been adamant in their disavowal of their father's financial schemes.
Since they are either innocent or lucky, it is not surprising that they would want to shed their family epithet.
Some names will never return to favor. Hitler comes to mind. There is an American man, Heath Campbell, who named his son, Adolph Hitler Campbell. The little tyke turned four last December. Unfortunately, for the child’s third birthday party, the local Shop Rite refused to ice in the name of the celebrant and add swastikas.
Hmmm.
The neighboring Wal-Mart had no trouble filling the specific bakery order.
That being said, most folks avoid names such as “Adolph” or “Stalin.”
And the jailed financier’s family is peddling as fast as they can away from “Madoff.”
It is also safe to surmise that not too many babies will be sporting the name Goldman Sachs any time soon.
