Karl Rove and his wife of 24 years have just dissolved their marriage. It will be his second divorce. Parsing through his immediate family history, Rove’s mother also divorced twice. The second marriage ended when Rove’s stepfather come out as gay.
Now what does the bible say
about that? :
Corinthians
7:10-11
“To the married I give this command
(not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she
does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a
husband must not divorce his wife.”
The religious right, conservatives
and strategists who pander to such groups have claimed custody of
marriage. And the sanctity of
such.
Two prominent Republicans, neither of
whom has given up their dream to become President, have enjoyed 6 wives between
them. Past and present.
In fact, former Mayor Giuliani and
former House Speaker Newt Gingrich could field a basketball starting line-up
and still have one woman remaining who could be the referee.
Both men, prominent leaders who have
leveraged their public service into fat paychecks, might just suffer from being
unlucky in love.
Hmmm. Giuliani’s first wife was a second cousin. He humiliated spouse number two. Not only was he stepping out on her, the
mother of his two children, but he also managed to slander her on a regular
basis as he was wooing mate number three.
Gingrich tiptoed out of his first
union as his wife lay in the hospital fighting breast cancer. Trophy wife number two was jettisoned
for the younger version of herself.
Hmmm.
Still, such people have advocated
barring gays from legal marriage.
Last year, Proposition 8 overturned
the legal right of gay marriage in California. Part of the campaign was funded by the Mormon Church. The folks whose history shows that pioneer and later leaders believed and practiced polygamy.
Karl Rove understood that extending
the franchisement of marriage is and will continue to be a non-issue. It is merely a diversion, a political
legerdemain to redirect the attention of voters.
If folks are worried about who can
marry, and thus divorce, practice infidelity and humiliate partners, then they
are distracted from a crashing economy or an unpopular war.
Let anyone who wants marry. Indict Bush.
